HOW TO APPLY TO BECOME A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR

The process of qualifying as an approved driving instructor is controlled by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). As well as a criminal record disclosure number, they’ll ask for your driving licence number and details of any driving offences or court cases brought against you.

3 KEY ATTRIBUTES YOU NEED TO BECOME A GOOD DRIVING INSTRUCTOR

The assessment aspect of becoming a driving instructor consists of 3 key Attributes to become good driving instructor

  • 1 – Theory Test
  • 2 – Driving Ability Test
  • 3 – Instructional Ability Test

THEORY PERCEPTION

Your first Driving Instructor Test is a theory exam consisting of 100 multiple choice questions and hazard perception.

After enrolling on the Approved Driving Instructors Course you, will receive a Home Study Pack of a DVD of multiple choice questions and the hazard perception. These can be studied and completed at home in your own time and at your convenience.

After completing the questions and hazard perception you will be ready to take the Theory Test. Along with the Theory Test you will also be given a Hazard Perception Test and the two together complete Part One of your training.

DRIVING ABILITY

This is a hands on, on the road course where all training takes place in the car. MA Driving School raise and refine your Driving Skills ensuring you reach all the high standards required by the Driving Standards Agency.

You are allowed three attempts only within the two year timescale.

INSTRUCTIONAL ABILITY

This part of the training prepares you for the Instructional Ability Test, which is an essential skill for any Driving Instructor. There are 10 basic scenarios used in the test, so your training will cover all of these thoroughly. The training takes place in the car and consists of 10 four hour sessions.

Once the 40 hour Training Course is completed you could be awarded a Trainee Licence. A Trainee Licence will allow you to work with a Driving School and give paid Driving Instructions before taking the Part 3 Test.
